Mariposa is Spanish for butterfly, and significant efforts are devoted to the attraction and study of these beautiful creatures. Special butterfly gardens as well as the preservation of more natural habitats entice visitors to view a variety of animal and plant life. Mariposa offers diverse environments. Stands of various pines and hardwoods provide solitude for guests and homes for numerous plants and animals. Trails throughout Mariposa allow for an up-close experience with deer, birds, and other wildlife.
Activities at Mariposa are as varied as your imagination. At the Lodge, swim in the indoor pool (open Memorial Day to Labor Day) or sun on the landscaped patio; play a game or two of ping pong, pool, or one of our many board games; or work a puzzle. In the park, enjoy catch'n'release fishing, hiking, horseshoes, volleyball, basketball, and wagon rides, or relax in the gazebo with a good book.
Allegany County, and the surrounding areas offer exciting lakes, abundant wildlife and gorgeous scenery. These provide endless possibilities for nature lovers, photographers, and vacationers.
Letchworth Park, probably the finest in the New York state park system, offers spectacular views of the Genesee River Gorge. Also known as the Grand Canyon of the East, Letchworth has roads and trails that lead to unparalleled views of this natural treasure. River rafting, hot air ballooning, and fine dining offer entertainment and fun for all.
Moss Lake Nature Sanctuary, owned by Nature Conservancy, allows visitors an up-close experience with its many fish, turtles, birds and other wildlife. An acidic soil bog, Moss Lake is home to rare carnivorous plants.
Also nearby are other scenic and cultural spots. See old farmhouses, canal locks, quaint stores, and inns. Glimpse the unique lifestyle of our Amish neighbors. Tour the campuses of Houghton College, Houghton Academy, Alfred University and Alfred State College. Ride the Arcade and Attica Railroad. Or enjoy gift shops, farm markets, and antique stores, country fairs, craft shows, band concerts . . .
Within easy travel are such famed attractions as Niagara Falls, Corning Museum of Glass, and Allegany State Park.
